When you think about outside spaces in central London, we really were so lucky to have this area where we were able to really enjoy the beautiful autumn colours of Regent's Park. The wedding breakfast was perfect, the food was delicious and plainly great care was taken over its preparation. Wedding food can sometimes be rather mediocre, but this certainly wasn't the case. Many people commented after that this had been the best food that they had had at a wedding. The room looked fantastic, exactly as we had pictured and of course overlooked the private lawn, you really wouldn't have thought that you were in central London.

We decided to get married to celebrate 10 years together. We had both lived in the area of Regent's Park for many years and knew that we wanted the wedding to be in the area of the park. We spend a lot of time there and our house is a couple of minutes from the rose garden area. We looked at a few venues around Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury, then walking home through the park found the private University hired rooms and grounds.
Within a few minutes of our first visit we both knew that this was the perfect venue for us. Rafael, the events manager there showed us the various rooms that were available for hire, and we found the Tuke Common Room was perfect as we wanted the day event to be quite intimate with only family and close friends, around 50 people. The room faced directly on to a large private lawn area which was easily accessible from the room and would be used during the day for photos. We were also shown the secret garden, which is a very private area where we could take our guests for drinks after the ceremony. We booked there and then, exactly 1 year before the wedding day.
One other Major factor that helped us decide that the venue was the correct place for us was Raf, who became our co-ordinator. Straight away we felt comfortable with him. He was full of suggestions, ideas and enthusiasm, plainly having a huge wealth of experience and knowledge concerning how to arrange the best day possible. Over the year running up to the wedding he always made himself available and was great liaising with the various people involved in the wedding.
The first thing we did was book the registrar with Westminster Council. On the day the ladies who came were fantastic and presided over a beautiful ceremony. We then had the rings made. We decided to have the rings made as we wanted something personal to us. We decided to go to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham as we knew it would be quite a lot cheaper than having them made in London. The jewellery quarter can be quite daunting as there are so many shops, but after discussing our options in many places we decided on Vault88 who were extremely helpful and had the rings ready within 6 weeks. After that we found a tailor to make our suits for the wedding. After some research we decided on Edit Suits, who are based by Liverpool Street. We both had very different ideas of colours we wanted for the wedding, matching suits really isn't our style. At the initial consultation we discussed style, colour and fabric type. The office has a wide selection of fabric samples so you get a really good idea of want you want. We were measured, then returned 6 weeks later for the fitting. Only minor adjustments were needed and the suits were ready a week after that.
Flowers were perhaps the only slight problem we had during the whole planning process. We tried engaging with a couple of suppliers who at first seemed enthusiastic, then stopped corresponding, meaning that I was left calling and trying to chase up quotes and ideas. In the end Black and Cook was recommended to us by Rafael. They were professional and prompt from the first discussion and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. We opted for two large arrangements for either side of the ceremony table, then centre arrangements for the tables for the wedding breakfast. As it was an October wedding we chose autumn colours. The flowers were fantastic and many people commented on just how beautiful they were.
All other arrangements for the decorations were arranged with the help of Raf and the Regent’s events team. We wanted quite a simple look with plain white linen on the table, with the only colour contrast coming from the flowers in the table centres. We did have yellow seat back ties to tie in with the autumn colour theme, which looked fantastic and were arranged by Raf.
The Regent’s events team arranged for us to have a food and wine tasting with the chef and catering manager. We chose the dishes we thought most suitable and were provided with a selection of wine to try. They were open to suggestions about how the food could be prepared to better suit our tastes. They were also very flexible in accommodating food requests for vegans, children and those with nut allergies. We were also able to discuss corkage as we wanted free flowing champagne to be available throughout the day, which we opted for in the end. Raf was able to suggest the most cost efficient way to enable this.
Finding a good photographer can be really hit and miss. We had heard horror stories about bossy, overbearing photographers who created a tense atmosphere, so we were very careful when choosing ours. We also wanted a relaxed natural approach to the photos, nothing too staged. We found Tom Aizenberg online and were taken by his style, so arranged a meeting. From the onset we knew that we had made a good choice, he was polite, relaxed and plainly experienced. On the day he was just great, and stayed with us for 12 hours. I really can't be more complimentary of the job he did and the photos we received.
The day itself was simply amazing, better than we could have ever expected. Our guests were able to access the venue via the park entrance which was great as it really made the park feel like part of the day, which was one of our wishes. Before the ceremony we were were able to mingle with our guests on the private lawns in front of the venue. Being an October wedding there was always a question about the weather, but we were incredibly lucky and the sun shone all day. This also gave Tom the opportunity to capture some lovely relaxed photos. As mentioned the service was fantastic. We kept it short and simple and it was exactly what we wanted. Once the ceremony was over we moved to the Secret Garden where champagne was served while the room was prepared for the wedding breakfast. The sun shone, the champagne flowed and a lovely relaxed time was had by all. At about 7pm, after a faultless day we walked across the park to The Union on Regents place that we had hired for the evening function. We were joined by another 100 or so friends. Bart, the manager there, had been really helpful and we had opted for them to also cater the evening. The food was great, they had also arranged a DJ, who we had met prior to the event to discuss our music tastes. Another nice touch was that they let us bring 15 bottles of champagne corkage free so that we could toast the wedding with guests who had joined in the evening. They also gave us a late licence and stayed open till 2am for us. Again, I couldn't recommend them more for events like this.
Our families stayed at the Melia Whitehouse hotel on Regents Place which was very convenient being a 10 minute walk through the park from the University and a 30 second walk to The Union. Other friends used the many airbnb properties available in the area. Us, we were able to walk to the venue in the morning which took about 10 minutes and walk home again at the end of the night, which also took about 10 minutes.
I really can't explain just how special it was for us to have the wedding so close to home. If you are looking for a central location with lots of outside space that feels private and open I really would recommend going and having a look round and a chat with Raf. Finally we would like to say a massive thank you to Raf and the team at The Regents University, Bart and the team at The Union and all our friends and family who travelled from the four corners of the world to celebrate our special day with us.
